Style Masterclass: 5 Steps to Lasting Curls

If your curls look lacklustre by midday or are completely gone, fear not! There are things you can do to have longer lasting curls. Use these five tips to make your curls and waves last.

1. Work with second-day hair.

Second-day hair is a great base for longer lasting curls. It’s not as smooth as freshly washed hair and holds a better curl.

While second-day hair is the ideal, it’s still possible to have long lasting curls with first-day hair. Use a good texturizing spray such as Moroccanoil’s Dry Texture Spray before curling to give hair some extra grit.

2. Prep your hair with product.

This sounds obvious, but the first thing to achieving longer lasting curls is preparation. Always use a heat protectant spray when using a heat styler. A good heat protectant will add moisture and minimize heat damage to your locks.

We like the Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil UV & Heat Protective Primer from Bumble and Bumble.

3. Use the right tools.

The secret to long lasting curls–or even a great hairstyle–is what you use. When considering your hair tools, make sure that you think about the type of plates used, the temperature range and how much it weighs. A heavy hair tool will make you less likely to take the time to section and curl your hair to your taste. Our cordless hair iron is very light and uses 1” plates, which are good for curling and styling all hair lengths!

Take your hair texture into account when deciding which material your styler will use. Our Lunata cordless hair iron uses titanium plates. It’s  lightweight, heats up quickly and retains heat. People with thicker or coarser hair would do well with this material.

Ceramic and tourmaline plates are some other common materials used in heat stylers. The surface of ceramic plates hold an even temperature, which will produce consistent curls. Ceramic plates would work well with thin or delicate hair.

4. Think about the temperature.

To get those long lasting curls while minimizing heat damage, you’ll need to play Goldilocks with your tool of choice. Too high of a temperature will scorch your hair; too low of a temperature will produce a lifeless, sad curl.

It may take some trial and error to get to your sweet spot, but take the time to experiment and find which temperatures work best for you. A good rule of thumb is to start at a lower temperature and work your way up to your ideal temperature slowly.

5. Go tighter and protect your curls.

Style your hair with a tighter curl than you initially prefer. You can lightly run your fingers or thread a comb through your hair to relax the curls if you need to. The curl will also naturally loosen throughout the day.

When you’re finally happy with your look, protect your waves with a finishing product. We like Verb’s Ghost hairspray available at Sephora.
